Located in the Appalachian Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest, 50 miles from Asheville. This campground sits at the base of Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain on the East Coast. The South Toe River runs alongside the campground. The Blue Ridge Parkway is easily accessible. Open April 15-October 30, 2020.
There are so many fantastic hikes and mountain bike rides from this campground. The river is also a highlight of this place. Autumn colors in this region are spectacular.
All the campsites are primitive, no full hook ups, but three have electric. There is a rustic dump station and bath houses with hot showers. Make sure you have enough gas and supplies; it’s a fair drive to those amenities.
You can approach this campground via the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway or through Burnsville. Burnsville has a quaint little downtown that’s worth a visit or to get maps at the Ranger office. Burnsville is also a good stop for supplies and gas. We love the hamlet of Mica.
Great for tubing and fishing.
Black Mountain Adventures
Recommend Pisgah Map Co. ‘Grandfather Ranger District’ map for hikes up to and around the summit of Mount Mitchell. Use the same map for hikes to Green Knob Fire Tower, and to the various waterfalls in the area that feed the South Toe River.
Fish, swim, tube, photograph and meditate all along the South Toe River. Just steps from your campsite. Campground office has a good map on the smaller trails in the campground.
Mountain biking on all forest roads around campground. Cycle up to the Blue Ridge Parkway on forest roads. Cycle three miles to J&J’s Grill on the Green for a beer and German-American food.
Stop by Micaville for a coffee and pastry at Maples. Peruse the local arts next door at OOAK Art Gallery.
